I’ve had the dream of backpacking across Europe for a very long time, which I’m finally doing this summer. I’m very excited, but that reality of being alone for a month and a half has set in. I can be very comfortable by myself, but that sometimes keeps me from reaching out. It’s a constant challenge for us introverts to get out of our shell. After leaving Europe, I’ll begin teaching in Taiwan and that’s really when the challenge will begin when I’m out of the backpacking culture and among the locals. Nothing worth having in this life is just handed to you though.

I left home as a quiet introvert and it wasn’t long before I broke out of my shell. Sometimes it is rough, but a few days of laying low and I am back at it. Traveling is an invaluable experience.

It’s true, by knowing other places, cultures, ways to live and to think, we ultimately get to know more about ourselves. That’s the growth we’re seeking!

Good post! Travelling does allow you to spread your wings and find the ‘truer’ you. Also, I find that the more you stop caring about what people think or say about you, the easier it is to negotiate your path in life. Thanks for sharing!

Granted I eat worse on vacation because I can’t pass up all the incredible food, but I move more so that helps balance things out.

When my lead at work mentioned how I had to be gentle and patient with a coworker who was quiet, that I was fearless, I thought yes travel really gives you confidence. Stepping outside your comfort zone, pushing yourself, exploring, assimilating, adjusting to differences are all part of travel.

I wish more people would visit different places, expose themselves to different religions, races, cultures, languages, food and history…

I was worried to travel to far places as the nerves were getting better of me for some time, but planning it out with all the information available here, I got less excuses to keep stuck in darkness and complaint about it. Now I feel better for realising one dream and it gives me more confidence for hopefully future travels. It also makes one even more different from the community of friends who are considering any travelling a luxury ( and be honest it still is, as it requires some money and some time and no all can work on the go). But experiencing the positive benefits of getting out there to unknown, it will stay one of my priorities for as long it will be possible. And I agree it won’t resolve your problems, but brings different perspective and makes you able to handle some of them.

And I love how you put it… Travel doesn’t do it, but it pushes you in the direction so you have to do it yourself.

It’s like the hand pushing you out of the airplane when you need to skydive, but are too scared to do it.

It’s funny, I don’t mean to advertise, but I wrote a similar, but also expanded post about self-improvement via travel on my blog.

I love what you’ve done with your blog, and I continue to read and learn from you. Thank you for being open with your lessons from blogging
