I’ve long held the opinion that North America does physical geography the way Britain does history. We have so many things of historical note that it takes a special thing to stand out. Within ten miles of where I live in Somerset there are stone circles, Roman roads, Roman temples, sites of battles and settlements from the Dark Ages, two castles, two Abbeys, two Cathedrals and Glastonbury tor; it takes something special to stand out from the background noise of important historical sites.

Well, the USA is like that but with physical geography. There’s just so much that is marvellous that it’s only the extraordinary that attracts attention. Crater Lake, for example; I know I gasped with astonishment the first time I saw it, a proper ‘What the . . .’ moment. A few miles north, Mount St Helens from the east side; a jaw-dropping sight. Monument Valley. Meteor crater. Yellowstone. Death Valley. Hills and mountains beyond number, rivers, lakes and waterfalls the same. The USA is home to some astonishing landscapes.

And now my must-visit list has got a little longer. Next year, when hopefully life will be getting back to normal, I’ll be dusting off the plans for a postponed (damn you, Covid!) trip to Colorado and New Mexico and after that, well. So many places, so little time . . .

She gave me a tour of the place and I was spellbound by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and the amazing natural beauty of the place.. It’s a definite place to visit if you love nature or probably want to spend a relaxing countryside-inspired weekend….
I am planning to visit the Alaska next after the pandemic.. can you recommend some travel ideas for the place?

I especially loved the idea of Cape Cod, a quaint destination and not much suggested in the to-visit lists. A definite place to visit for history buffs out there, and a great place to spend some relaxing time.

I’m so sad you didn’t include any part from Alaska! Can’t believe it didn’t make the list! Thanks

I’ve been to Sleeping Bear Dunes several times and like visiting because it is very pretty and only a few hours from my home. To claim it is more beautiful than Grand Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Olympic, Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Redwoods, Arches, Capitol Reef, Rocky Mountain, Big Bend, Smoky Mountains, etc. is absurd. I mean no slight to Sleeping Bear Dunes but be a little more realistic in your claims.

I have been to the Grand Canyon and many of the other places. I’m embarrassed to say I’ve never been to Chicago. I’ll have to make it happen soon.

(My wife has been there) We are not really into the food-beer-wine scene and are not really “big city” lovers either, but still have been to lots of cities.
Some great places you have not listed: Yellowstone NP, Yosemite NP (though it can be very crowded), Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse monuments, (Deadwood was better before gambling), Salt Lake City and Great Salt Lake, Niagara Falls, Vicksburg, MS (Civil War History), any cities in Southern Alaska, Hawaii, Snake River in Idaho, Lava Beds Park in Oregon, and oh so many more!

The Northwoods of Wisconsin is ideal for getting back in touch with nature. And with all the great lodging options, you can tent camp, stay at a resort like Birch Trail Resort or RV it up. Either way, hope you all get to experience it soon!
