Your article is so inspiring and useful. We make our trips only in Europe, with 4 children we are afraid of lack of money, but after what I read now, I see things from a new perspective.

You basically stayed with family for free, for 5 months of a 10 month trip?
So you spent $40,000 in 5 months? $8000 a month?
This is not low cost travel!!
I travel with my family of 4, for 6 months of the year – we spend, on average $2000 a month.
I don’t get why a low cost travel website is featuring what many would call a luxury budget?

We did a similar thing just last year with our two kids and went to 23 countries in one year. This overview gave such good insight to all travelling families and hopefully can inspire other families to just travel with their kids. It truly is surprising how little it does actually cost if you slow travel and your purposely make a choice on what you spend your money on. We ended up spending less travelling full-time than what our average monthly expenses were living in Canada! Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing Cliff! What an experience, that I’m sure you will all remember forever, and that no-one can ever take away from you. And what a dream for me… although if I had to mention it to my hubby right now, to be honest, he’d probably think I’ve lost my mind LOL. So inspiring, and a great reminder of what life is really about…

I really like the idea of putting kids in short-term school. I think the next time we do some long-term travel we’ll do that as well. It balances the kid’s socialization and some adult time. Any plans for more long-term travel in the future?

We travel a lot with the kids, but travelling long term, like you guys do, is still one of my biggest wishes :).

Somehow I keep on seeing problems, like schooling the kids, quitting our jobs etc. Your article helps me see things in perspective money wise.

Thanks! Would love to read more of your adventures and tips.

Safe travels!

We are traveling with a teenager. Any other ideas of taking classes at different places?

Indeed, it’s rewarding see them happy and having fun.

And thanks for reminding us why its important to travel while our children are still young. I’m surrounded by family and friends who tell us to wait until they’re older, when they’ll be able to remember and I start to believe them. I know that the trips we take now, even if they don’t remember them, will help form their characters and outlooks on life and on the world. Great post and very informative!
