I’m living here in Thailand and it’s all your fault. Before I left Miami to travel the world on a 100 country tour I read Matt’s book How To Travel The World On $50 A Day. I was not a traveler per say and it’s the only reference that I used and needed. Before COVID hit I was in Sri Lanka and decided to come to Thailand to weather the storm. I’ve been living here on an island in the south called Koh Phangan for more than 1 year now and I’m currently on a cross-country motorcycle tour of the country. I’ve never met Matt, only read his book and I just want to say thank you for giving me the insight and the courage to make this trip: 17 countries, 4 continents, 19 months in and I’m just getting started. What a ride. If you were ever thinking about giving it all up to go see the world… I highly recommend you get over the fear and do it. This has been the best decision I’ve ever made. I love meat. It’s delicious but, if you think the suffering of animals for your entertainment is great, then you’re just a bad human being.

The part about elephants is pure BS. This website and it’s writers are associated with PETA, Animal Justice, Green Peace and other left wing groups. Most do not believe in owning pets or eating meat. They do not think you should ride a horse. Do not believe their propaganda.
Ride an elephant or pet a tiger. There is nothing like it.

We’re heading to Thailand next, and can’t wait to explore the country. Thanks for this post, it’s given us a lot of things to add to our already extremely large list of things to do there. 🙂

It’s pretty cheap and the food and service was amazing!

The food! It’s so wonderful and varies so much all over the country. I can’t wait to get back there.

Brilliant post, but I blame you now for my need to head right back there!

Went to only famous places and came back. Thank you for telling me that Thailand is much more than Phi phi island and Phuket. If i get a chance to go there again then for sure I am following your itinerary. Good post!

It seems perhaps it’s not so great anymore. I visited this past April 2018 and I found that Bangkok was a complete disaster — certainly very trashy, extremely loud, polluted, and difficult to navigate (forget walking or riding a bicycle, not possible unless you have a death wish). There wasn’t a single redeeming quality that I could find. I thought Chiang Mai would be better, but it was a s#!+hole too. CM was so polluted when I was there that NONE of the mountains were visible. It was like Los Angeles in the 1980s. Terrible, could hardly breathe. There is garbage everywhere, like nobody cares to use a trash can. The food was surprisingly not that great either, nor were the people particularly friendly. Especially when compared to visiting Japan the week before, and Malaysia the week after — both of which were much cleaner, easy to walk around or ride a bicycle, with incredible food (even at cheap prices), and friendly people. There really was no comparison. Thailand sucked.

I’ve travelled all over and although I’ve enjoyed most places, nothing prepared me for the love affair that flourished whilst visiting Thailand. The best country in the world by far.
