Hi Joanne,

If you bought in Vineyards or Sunny day so not worry, it’s is quiet and peaceful away from the resort. Also you have the choice of many beautiful beaches to spend your time at, and quaint historical villages such as Nessebur (3km from SB) absolutely gorgeous, also go the other way SVETI Vlas a lovely Marina and beach and then further up you have Varna the city snd city beach also gorgeous then my favourite Obzor- just lovely! Congrats on your buy I am sure you got a bargain and you won’t regret having a base in Beautiful Bulgaria! Allen’s is another gorgeous beach town but quite large. Ones to avoid are SB and Golden sands, package hol towns busy and party places, not pretty but out of season SB aid actually a very beautiful beach when there is no one there! Oh and Skorpilvotsi huge empty gorgeous, and Irakli, one of the most beautiful beaches in Europe , enjoy!

I’m sure the locals appreciate your drunk British self just as much as the locals in Benidorm do.

Sunny beach is a drink, food and weather resort. If you want culture go to Rome. It is also cheap to other destinations but it used to be super cheap 30p a pint. You just need to accept what this place is just like Benidorm.

I’m sure it’s not so bad right now since there’s hardly any tourists there. It might actually be nice! Do report back!

I should have read this first. I have just bought an apartment a few kilometres inland between Sunny Beach and the mountain area of Stara Planina.
Eeek! A mistake? Bought it yesterday off photos, can’t visit yet because of the Covid lockdown. I will report back once I have seen it for myself ???

Sunny beach was the most wonderful sea resort in BG when I was a kid- Cristal water, long empty golden sands beach with no any chairs on it. Very few and good looking hotels surrounded by beautiful trees…Then it was turned in a stone resort and night party area…awful…
But we still have other more quite places as Carevo, Veleka.
Mountains are many and incredible- Pirin, Rodopa, Rila, Stara Planina, Vitosha- our nature is very beautiful.
And Veliko Tarnovo is the historical heart of the country and one of the magical towns .

Sunny Beach is in the center of a very large bay, with St Vlas on the north side of the bay about two miles away, with a posh marina. The south side of the bay very near Sunny Beach is a UNESCO heritage site dating back over 2000 years of greek origin. So you three areas within the bay, Sunny Beach central for party goers, St Vlas for the rich and the jewel of Bulgaria Nessebar old town for people who appreciate culture and old buildings and churches. Nessbar south beach is a wonderful beach. It’s a shame you miss out in these areas which is 15 mins by bus. Suggest you go back to rewrite your piece as it is very negative and you really failed to explore the bay.

I am from Bulgaria and I can agree with the written above and all the comments after. Sunny Beach is overrated. I am sick of people always telling me let’s go to Sunny Beach and get wasted. Come on I am going on a vacation and I want to relax and see some beautiful scenery. The smaller towns and resorts are the go for Bulgaria as they are cleaner and have a more relaxing atmosphere. Pomorie, Obzor, Primorsko are my choices when i go on a vacation at the sea.
Hey Matt, I want to share a Bulgaria destination with you since I am not sure if you have visited it. Just type in Google “Pirin koncheto”, people say that they come back a different person once they climb peak and it’s really beautiful. You can even take some nice pictures there.

There are some much more charming locations in Bulgaria with beautiful smaller beaches where you can’t find a single chair even if you wanted to. A prime example is Bolata beach. Sadly enough, most people don’t have a clue that the north part of the Black sea (Varna and above) is times and times more appealing than the southern.

When/if you visit Bulgaria again, do check it out. I strongly recommend Yailata (archeological reserve on the rocks with stunning scenery), Bolata beach, Zelenka beach and some smaller ones near the Golden sands but you’ll get best advice from the locals while there.

P.S. Also – if you visit the country again please drop us a line – we’d gladly offer you a complimentary rental car to explore its beauty.

I completely share your opinion about Sunny beach. We went there because we wanted a cheap laid-back holiday. Everything you write about it is true, but we also had really bad weather. It was the first week of September and we had pouring rain. Then more pouring rain. And then some more. It was one of my worst holidays ever. We still joke a lot about it now because it was so bad. 🙂
By I don’t share your opinion about Ko Phi Phi. We went there during low season and it was rather quiet and relaxed. We didn’t have to overpay for our drinks either and the locals were really friendly. So my guess is that high season is horrible, but low season still contains some of the old charm.
