Melbourne skyline as viewed in back of an arched pedestrian bridge

Melbourne is my favorite city in Australia. It’s a vibrant, multicultural city known for its rich arts scene, world-class dining, and lively atmosphere. It’s a hub for backpackers and travelers too.

The mix of old-world architecture and modern skyscrapers gives the city a unique charm. I especially love strolling through Melbourne’s iconic laneways, enjoying the colorful street art and popping into hidden bars.

There’s so much to do here that you could easily spend a week and not get bored. No matter how long you have though, choosing a great hotel is paramount. There are a ton of hotels in the city, and not all of them are good. In fact, I’ve stayed in some that were downright terrible!

So, to help you make the most of your visit down under, here is my list of the best hotels in Melbourne:

1. Treasury on Collins

 in Melbourne, Australia
This four-star aparthotel is in the city’s CBD (central business district; the neighborhood in Melbourne I recommend for most travelers). The building itself is a 19th-century landmark, and I think the hotel has done a great job of maintaining its character while updating the place, with high ceilings and elegant details like gilded crown molding in all the public spaces. The hotel has a fitness center, and I like the complementary happy hour that they host each evening. It’s a nice touch. The daily breakfast buffet is also complementary and includes your standard fare: a selection of hot dishes, pastries, cereals, and fresh fruit.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with large windows that let in plenty of natural light. I like the simple but sophisticated design, with neutral tones and quality furnishings. Suites have a kitchenette with a mini-fridge, microwave, and a Nespresso coffee machine, while full apartments also have a cooktop and dishwasher. All rooms have a washer/dryer, a large TV with Netflix, and a good-sized work desk (something I always appreciate). The bathrooms are modern and clean, featuring walk-in showers, premium toiletries, and soft towels. Overall, this is a great choice for travelers that want access to a kitchen in a centrally located upscale hotel.

2. The Victoria Hotel

 in Melbourne, Australia
This historic, three-star property in the heart of the city was established in 1880. I love its traditional design, with its grand entrance and Art Deco décor throughout the lobby and restaurant (which offers a breakfast buffet as well as lunch and dinner). The hotel offers basic but useful amenities, including a fitness center, a heated plunge pool, and a sauna.

The rooms are simple but comfortable, with a minimalist design that maximizes space. Rooms vary in size but generally offer decent space for a city hotel, with large windows providing natural light. As a solo traveler, I especially like that there are single rooms, a good option for travelers on a budget that want more privacy than staying in a hostel dorm. Each room includes basic amenities like a flatscreen TV, tea and coffee-making facilities, a mini-fridge, and a small workspace. The bathrooms are clean and functional, featuring either a walk-in shower or a combination shower and tub. I think this is the best choice for travelers looking for a comfortable and budget-friendly stay in the city center.

3. W Melbourne

 in Melbourne, Australia
I love this trendy five-star property. It has a bold design and vibrant atmosphere. The hotel features sleek, contemporary interiors with funky art pieces and neon lighting. It’s packed with amenities too, including a rooftop heated pool that’s open 24/7, a large high-tech fitness center, and a spa. There are multiple dining options as well, from a stylish cocktail bar to a high-end restaurant serving creative dishes. Breakfast offers a range of options, from fresh pastries and fruit to more substantial hot meals, all in an chic setting.

The rooms here are spacious and ultra-modern, with an edgy, stylish design. There are large, comfy beds, big flatscreen TVs with casting functionality, a desk, complimentary bottled water, and stocked minibars. I love the floor-to-ceiling windows as they provide lots of natural light. The black marble bathrooms are sleek and luxurious, featuring huge walk-in rain showers, light-up mirrors, high-end toiletries, plenty of counter space, and even heated toilet seats! If you’re looking for a unique, high-end experience in the CBD, stay here.

4. Quest St. Kilda Bayside

 in Melbourne, Australia
This four-star apartment hotel is just minutes from St. Kilda Beach, one of my favorite areas in the city. The hotel has a modern, minimalist design and offers a relaxed atmosphere. Amenities include a small outdoor swimming pool, BBQ facilities, a gym, and secure on-site parking. While there’s no on-site restaurant, each apartment comes with a fully equipped kitchen, and there are plenty of cafés and restaurants nearby for breakfast and other meals.

The spacious apartments all have separate living and dining areas, as well as full kitchens with a stove, microwave, mini fridge, toaster, and a tea/coffee maker. Rooms also have a washer/dryer and smart TVs. The bathrooms are clean and functional, with walk-in showers that have excellent water pressure, as well as nice complimentary toiletries. Overall, the apartments provide a home-like feel with all the essential amenities for a longer stay in a vibrant part of the city.

5. The Langham Hotel

 in Melbourne, Australia
This luxurious five-star property is located along the Yarra River in the heart of the Southbank. I love the grand elegance here, from the marble entranceway to the chandeliers and plush furnishings. You can expect top-notch amenities here too, including a pool in a beautiful atrium, a well-equipped fitness center with a sauna and steam room, and a spa known for its exceptional wellness treatments. The hotel’s restaurant serves a high-end buffet, and while it’s expensive, it’s worth a try, even if just for breakfast. It’s quite extravagant and features a massive array of baked goods, an egg station where you can get benedicts or omelets, as well as other hot dishes like brioche French toast and waffles.

The spacious rooms have a classic, luxurious feel, featuring large windows with stunning views of either the city skyline or the river. Rooms come with plush bedding, a 55” smart TV, a minibar, and a work desk. The bathrooms are equally upscale, offering marble finishes, deep soaking tubs, walk-in showers with good water pressure, high-end toiletries, fluffy bathrobes, and slippers. If you’re looking for a place to splurge, this is it!

6. Ovolo South Yarra

 in Melbourne, Australia
I like the eclectic and colorful design of this trendy four-star hotel. It’s very retro chic, filled with pop art on the walls and funky furniture throughout. The lobby and common areas are bright and inviting, making it a fun place to hang out. The hotel offers several amenities, including a gym that’s open 24/7 and complimentary self-serve laundry. There are also fun and unique touches like the sweets station by the elevators (it has jars of gummies, jellybeans, and M&Ms). The on-site restaurant, Lona Misa, serves breakfast in the mornings and plant-based cuisine with a Latin twist in the evenings.

The rooms are compact but stylish, with a design that has a distinctly 1970s feel thanks to the color palette and quirky décor. Despite the smaller size, the rooms are well laid out and filled with natural light from the large windows. All rooms are soundproofed and have blackout blinds as well as comfortable beds so you can get good sleep. In-room amenities include flatscreen TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and a tap with filtered water in the bedroom (which I appreciate as it helps avoid single-use plastic bottles). The bathrooms are sleek and modern, featuring rain showers, quality toiletries, and funky tile designs. Overall, the rooms offer a cozy yet unique experience, perfect for travelers looking for something a bit different.

The iconic Sydney Opera House on the shore of the city on a beautiful, sunny day

Sydney is where most travelers start their trip to Australia. It’s the country’s largest city (almost 20% of the entire population lives here), boasting incredible beaches, a fun nightlife, and lots of museums and galleries.

I’ve been visiting the city since 2007 and always have an amazing time. Sydney is gorgeous and I never get tired of admiring the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. But while the city has plenty to keep you busy, it is a bit spread out. That means picking the right place to stay is important.

Over the years, I’ve stayed at countless hotels. There’s a lot in the city and picking one can be overwhelming. Here’s my list of the best hotels in Sydney:

    1. Mercantile Hotel

A large and spacious hotel room at the Mercantile Hotel in Sydney, Australia
Located in the historic Rocks neighborhood, this three-star hotel is just five minutes walk from the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge. I especially like that it’s home to Australia’s longest-running Irish pub, where you can enjoy regular live music along with your pint.

A mid-range hotel, the rooms here are simple, minimalist, and practical. While it’s not super arty or unique, the rooms are large and the beds are comfortable. There’s free Wi-Fi, AC, and a coffee/tea maker in each room too. The bathrooms, while small, are well-kept and everything is in good condition. There’s no breakfast available, but there are lots of options nearby. The emphasis here is more on location than amenities, but you still get good value. It’s the best place to stay in The Rocks on a budget.

    2. Coogee Bay Boutique Hotel

A large hotel room with ocean-influenced wallpaper the Coogee Bay Hotel in Sydney, Australia
This breezy four-star hotel is in Coogee Bay, a beachy neighborhood southeast of the city. I love that the hotel is just a two-minute walk to the beach. All the rooms here are spacious and airy, with beachy colors and decorations. Rooms also have flatscreen TVs, desks, coffee/tea makers, and minibars. The bathrooms are roomy too, with showers that have good water pressure.

Breakfast is served at the hotel’s beachside bar and grill, and the hotel also has an art-deco style cocktail bar and sports bar. If you have a vehicle, there’s private parking too (which is rare in the city). If you want a quieter, more relaxing stay, this is the hotel for you.

    Book here!

    3. Crystalbrook Albion

A large and spacious hotel room with a huge bed at the Crystalbrook Albion in Sydney, Australia
South of downtown in Surry Hills, this five-star luxury hotel is located in a gorgeous brick heritage building that was once a former convent. The property is elegantly designed, taking inspiration from both the 20’s and the 70s. The result is eclectic yet chic. I especially like all the colorful artwork in the lobby, lounge, and halls.

Each room is unique, but all are bright and airy, with lots of natural light. The beds are large and comfy, and rooms also have flatscreen TVs, desks, coffee/tea makers, and plush bathrobes. The bathrooms are also spacious and bright, with large rain showers and boutique design touches like colorfully tiled walls. There’s a cool rooftop terrace too, and the breakfast each morning includes lots of fresh pastries. I think this is a gorgeous, stylish hotel, perfect if you want to splash out.

    Book here!

    4. Glasgow Arms Hotel

A small but cozy hotel room at the Glasgow Arms in Sydney, Australia
This hotel is located above a beautiful old pub. It’s not particularly stylish and the design is a bit dated, but there’s a free continental breakfast served each morning and the hotel is just a five-minute walk from Darling Harbour. It’s more of a no-frills place to crash, the pub food is excellent, and the staff go above and beyond to make you feel welcome.

The rooms, while not particularly large, are bright and have lots of natural light. There’s a desk, flatscreen TV, and free Wi-Fi in each. The bathrooms are on the smaller side but have nice showers with great water pressure. Everything is clean and comfortable, making this a good choice for travelers looking for value and simplicity.

    Book here!

    5. The Darling at The Star

A huge hotel room with lots of natural light at the Darling at the Star hotel in Sydney, Australia
This is a massive five-star hotel home to a spa, casino, and over 20 bars and restaurants. I really like that they have a Turkish bath, but there’s also a heated outdoor swimming pool (which has its own bar). The breakfast doesn’t have a ton of options, but what is on offer is exceptional. The hotel also has a valet service if you have a vehicle. Overall, it has more of a resort atmosphere than a regular hotel.

The rooms are large and spacious, with lots of natural light. They have a sleek, modern design and feature tons of perks, including flatscreen TVs, minibars, desks, plush bathrobes, and Egyptian cotton sheets. The bathrooms are also bright and spacious, with marble features and huge bathtubs. If you want luxury in the heart of the city, this is the hotel for you.

    Book here!

    6. Hotel Bondi

A large but simple hotel room at Hotel Bondi in Sydney, Australia
This three-star boutique hotel has both private and shared balconies with sprawling views overlooking the popular Bondi Beach. Everything is modern and the design has a simple, minimalist feel. The rooms are large and bright and include everything you need (Wi-Fi, desk, TV, coffee/tea maker). There are deluxe rooms with kitchen facilities too, if you want to cook your own meals (though there’s also a restaurant on-site).

While the hotel itself isn’t anything to write home about, the price for the location is fantastic. After all, Bondi Beach is right across the street!

    Book here!

    7. Sydney Potts Point

A large bed and spacious hotel room at the Sydney Potts Point hotel in Sydney, Australia
This four-star apartment hotel boasts a rooftop terrace with views over the city and is located just five-minutes from the rambunctious nightlife of Kings Cross. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes and there are also BBQ facilities on the rooftop if you want to cook outdoors. As for amenities, rooms have a desk, fridge, flatscreen TV, and coffee/tea maker. The beds have thick mattresses and are really comfy. The rooms have lots of space and light too (the bathrooms are kind of small though). There’s no breakfast offered, but with a kitchenette, you can easily prepare your own food.

It’s not super fancy place, but everything is well-maintained and there’s even some art in each room. I like that everything feels modern and clean here.

A sunny day with blue skies over the downtown CBD of Brisbane, Australia

Brisbane is third-largest city in Australia. Most travelers visit the city on their way to the Gold Coast or as they head up toward Cairns. They tend not to stay too long as the city doesn’t really have the allure that other parts of Australia does.

But Brisbane actually has plenty to see and do and I think people often short change it.

Home to 2.5 million people, it’s a very outdoorsy place, with lots of parks and even an urban beach. There’s a high quality of life and a hip restaurant scene, and the largest koala sanctuary in the world is just outside of town.

Since it’s not too spread out, you’re never really too far from anything. But it never hurts to pick a neighborhood that fits your travel plans (and your budget). To help you figure out where to stay, here’s my list of the best neighborhoods in Brisbane:

Where to Stay in Brisbane for Sightseeing: Inner City/CBD

A towering and bustling downtown CBD of sunny Brisbane, Australia
If you want to be in the center of it all, stay in the Inner City, known colloquially as the CBD (Central Business District). You’ll find many great attractions here (the Museum of Brisbane, City Botanic Gardens, and Queensland Holocaust Museum), as well as lots of restaurants and cocktail bars. Don’t miss the Brooklyn Standard, a NYC-themed bar with a speakeasy vibe and fantastic live music. If you want to shop, the expansive Queen Street Mall is here as well.

The CBD is a convenient location if you’re traveling elsewhere in Australia, as it’s home to the main transit center, where all long-distance buses and trains leave from. Plus, it’s located in between South Bank and Fortitude Valley, two other popular neighborhoods, so it’s easy to get to both from here.

Best places to stay in Inner City/CBD:

BUDGET: Roamer Brisbane – This upscale hostel across from the main train station features private rooms and dorms painted in warm, welcoming tones and decorated with local artwork. Bunks are pod-style, with individual reading lights, thick mattresses, curtains, outlets, and lockers. There’s also a co-working area, an outdoor cinema terrace, a library, and a fully equipped kitchen. It’s a good option for travelers on a budget looking for a quiet stay.

MIDRANGE: Royal on the Park – Located directly across from the City Botanic Gardens, this hotel has a stately feel to it with its large rooms, carpet, and dark wood decor. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, a hot tub, a lounge, and a restaurant that serves an expansive breakfast buffet. The generously sized rooms are simply designed, with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in a ton of natural light. Rooms also have ergonomic work desks, USB ports, and espresso machines.

LUXURY: W Brisbane – There’s no shortage of luxury hotels in this neighborhood, but this five-star hotel takes the cake. Like all W properties, it’s stylishly designed, and this location offers three restaurants and bars, a spa and fitness center, and a pool overlooking the river. The spacious rooms are funky and bright, with fun pops of color, deep bathtubs, rainfall showerheads, Nespresso machines, desks, and 55-inch flat-screen TVs.

Where to Stay in Brisbane for Food and Culture: South Bank

People relaxing on the edge of South Bank near the water looking over towards the CBD of Brisbane, Australia
This beautiful area is just south of the CBD, directly across the Brisbane River. Here you’ll find a stunning inner-city beach, miles of tree-lined walks and parks, fabulous shopping, and plenty of restaurants. There are many great museums too, including the Queensland Cultural Centre (which includes the Queensland Art Gallery and the Gallery of Modern Art). The famous Wheel of Brisbane (a 60-meter-tall observation wheel) is right along the riverfront too.

I really enjoy just walking the river promenade or getting something to eat as I people-watch. You often see musicians and outdoor dance classes here and, in the summer, there are usually a lot of events and festivals too.

Best places to stay in South Bank:

BUDGET: As one of the most expensive areas of town, there aren’t any real budget-friendly accommodations to be found here. You’re better off either staying in West End just to the south or across the river in Inner City. The closest hostel to the area is Somewhere to Stay Backpackers.

MIDRANGE: Novotel Brisbane South Bank – This sleek hotel offers an outdoor swimming pool, a fitness center, and a restaurant serving a delicious breakfast buffet. The spacious rooms have a modern design, with lots of clean, white space and pops of color from the Brisbane-centric photography on the walls. All rooms have comfy beds, a seating area, flat-screen TVs, open-plan bathrooms, and electric kettles.

LUXURY: Emporium Hotel South Bank – This five-star hotel exudes contemporary elegance, with chic furnishings, plush fabrics, and curated art. Amenities include a luxe infinity pool, a spa, a fitness center, and three restaurants. The large rooms have incredible views and boast luxurious mattresses, Bose sound systems, and marble bathrooms with indulgent showers that have excellent pressure. Many have balconies as well as spa baths.

Where to Stay in Brisbane for Nightlife: The Valley

A quiet street of the Fortitude Valley area of Brisbane, Australia
Fortitude Valley, known locally as just “The Valley,” is the place to go to hit the town hard. It attracts a young crowd that comes for the plethora of clubs and bars in the area. If you’re looking for some nightlife that isn’t so wild, head to the formerly industrial Howard Smith Wharves along the river, which have been transformed into a pedestrian boardwalk brimming with some of the city’s best restaurants and bars. Craft beer fans shouldn’t miss Felon’s Brewing Co. If you’re into cocktails, head to Mr. Percival’s overwater bar for excellent drinks with even better views.

Best places to stay in The Valley:

BUDGET: Bunk Brisbane – This hostel attracts younger travelers, though it’s surprisingly not that social (there’s no bar, and there aren’t many common areas, though there is a bar and pool next door). It’s located in a renovated warehouse, meaning that there are high ceilings and large windows with lots of natural light flooding the entire place. There are both private rooms with en suite bathrooms and dorms (including female-only dorms). All rooms are quite spacious and furnished with wood furniture. The showers have great pressure, and there’s a guest kitchen and laundry facilities too.

MIDRANGE: The Constance Fortitude Valley – This funky boutique hotel is decorated with colorful street art and murals by artists from around the world. All rooms have a desk, a pod coffee machine, a walk-in shower, blackout curtains, and a minibar; some have spa baths and a private courtyard. There’s a rooftop bar, a café offering breakfast, a fitness center, and free access to a nearby pool and gym. It’s great value for your money.

LUXURY: Crystalbrook Vincent – Located on the edge of Fortitude Valley, this sleek five-star property almost feels like a resort. It features an infinity pool with magnificent views, two restaurants, and a fitness center. The spacious rooms are all uniquely designed, with curated artwork and bold accents (like emerald-green couches and brightly colored throw blankets). All rooms have comfy beds, walk-in rainfall showers, plush bathrobes, flat-screen TVs, desks, and blackout blinds, and most even have a couch. The hotel has a strong focus on sustainability, with waste-free bathrooms and upcycled furnishings.

Where to Stay in Brisbane to Feel like a Local: West End

A large symbol painted on the road of the West End of Brisbane, Australia
The hip West End, just south of South Bank, is packed with independent shops, bookstores, craft cocktail bars and breweries, third-wave coffee spots, and great eateries. It’s an especially popular area for brunch; you’ll find lots of Greek restaurants here too, thanks to the thriving Greek community in the area. The alleyways are adorned with beautiful murals, and on the weekends several markets pop up, taking over the streets. This is the best place to stay to soak up local life, but it’s also not far from the attractions of South Bank and Inner City, meaning you can truly have the best of both worlds here.

Best places to stay in West End:

BUDGET: Somewhere to Stay Backpackers – This hostel offers both affordable private rooms and dorm beds (including female-only dorms). It almost feels like a resort, with an outdoor pool set in a leafy interior courtyard, a veranda with fantastic views over the city, yard games, hammocks to lounge in, and a massive, fully equipped kitchen. The rooms themselves are pretty basic but this is the kind of place where it’s more about common spaces anyway.

MIDRANGE: Atlas Apartments by CLLIX – This condo hotel offers apartments with a clean, modern, minimalist design. All have floor-to-ceiling windows, fully equipped kitchens, a dining area, walk-in showers, and a balcony or terrace. The property has an outdoor pool, a fitness center, a steam room, a barbecue area, and laundry facilities as well. It’s a wonderful place to stay if you’re traveling as a group or family.

LUXURY: As more of a residential neighborhood, there aren’t any true luxury hotels here. If you’re looking for something high-end, head to the Emporium Hotel in nearby South Bank

      ***

Brisbane is a fun city whose cultural diversity is reflected in its eclectic neighborhoods, each contributing to the city’s identity. When choosing where to stay in Brisbane, don’t fret too much, as it’s pretty small and easy to get around. You’re never too far from anything. As long as you choose from the above neighborhoods (and hotels), you can’t go wrong.

The towering downtown skyline of Brisbane as seen from over the river on a sunny day in Australia

Perched on the banks of the Brisbane River, Brisbane is renowned for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, laid-back lifestyle, and bustling urban scene. Located on the eastern edge of the country, most people visit as they travel up the coast, stopping for a day or two before heading onward to the Gold Coast or Cairns.

While it may not be as popular as Sydney or Melbourne, Brisbane won’t disappoint. It is the third-largest city in Australia and offers visitors a mix of modern architecture and lush outdoor spaces. And while most visitors are drawn to its outdoorsy vibe, it’s a cultural hub too, offering fantastic museums and galleries, vibrant street art, and iconic landmarks. (It’s even set to be the home of the 2032 Summer Olympics!)

To help you plan your visit, here’s my list of the best hotels in Brisbane:

        1. Novotel Brisbane South Bank

A huge bed in a spacious hotel room at the Novotel hotel in Brisbane, Australia
Nestled in the vibrant heart of the South Bank district, this four-star hotel impresses with its sleek, modern design and chic, contemporary décor. It’s a large property that includes an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and restaurant serving a delicious breakfast buffet. The rooms are all spacious and have comfy beds with plush duvets, a seating area, smart TVs, and desks. The bathrooms are large and most have an open-plan design. Overall, it’s a great choice for those seeking a stylish stay in the heart of the city.

        2. Royal on the Park

A large, airy hotel room at the Royal on the Park hotel in Brisbane, Australia
Located directly across from the lush botanical gardens in the Inner City (and a short walk from the popular Queen Street Mall), I find this hotel charming. There’s an outdoor swimming pool, hot tub, lounge, and restaurant that serves an expansive breakfast buffet. The generously sized rooms are simply designed, with floor-to-ceiling windows that let in a ton of natural light. The beds are super comfy and, while the bathrooms aren’t huge, they are well-equipped and well-lit and have good water pressure. All of the rooms have ergonomic work desks, USB ports by the beds, and espresso machines too. And, as a nice welcoming perk, a complimentary drink is offered on arrival.

        3. The Constance Fortitude Valley

A colorful, arty room at the Constance Fortitude Valley hotel in Brisbane, Australia
This funky boutique hotel is decorated with colorful street art and murals by artists from around the world. There’s a cool rooftop bar, a café offering breakfast, a fitness center, and free access to a nearby pool and gym. All rooms have a desk, a pod coffee machine, a walk-in shower, blackout curtains, and a minibar (some even have spa baths and a private courtyard). Overall, this hotel blends artistic flair with modern comforts and amenities, making it a standout choice for those looking for a unique stay that has style and character.

        4. Crystalbrook Vincent

A cool, arty hotel room at the Crystalbrook Vincent hotel in Brisbane, Australia
Located on the edge of Fortitude Valley right at the base of the famous Story Bridge, this epic five-star property is one of the best hotels in Brisbane. It almost feels like an urban resort, with two restaurants, a fitness center, and an infinity pool with magnificent views. Plus, the rooftop bar offers a panoramas of the city’s skyline. The spacious rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, comfy beds, plush bathrobes, flatscreen TVs, and desks. Most have a couch too. The bathrooms are massive, with walk-in rainfall showers with great pressure. This is the best choice for travelers who want to stay along the waterfront, with all the great restaurants and bars of the Howard Smith Wharves just steps away. This is my favorite luxury hotel in the city.

        5. Atlas Apartments by CLLIX

A large, well-lit apartment hotel room with lots of natural light in Brisbane, Australia
This condo hotel located at the edge of West End offers modern-design apartments with lots of natural light thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows. All units have a balcony or terrace, a fully equipped kitchen, a dining area, and a walk-in shower with powerful pressure. Plus, the property has an outdoor pool, a steam room, a barbecue area, a fitness center, and laundry facilities. However, there’s no restaurant (or breakfast) on-site, and housekeeping is only complimentary after a seven-day stay. The late checkout at 2pm is an uncommon (but welcome) perk though, which is helpful if you don’t have to leave until later in the day. These self-contained apartments are ideal if you’re planning a long stay or traveling with a family.

The spacious and elegant rooms are opulent yet comfortable, with indulgent showers with excellent water pressure. Rooms have incredible views and boast marble bathrooms, luxurious mattresses, and Bose sound systems. Many have balconies as well as spa baths. People exploring a wide-open park near the war memorial in sunny Melbourne, Australia

Famed for its restaurant and coffee scene, Melbourne is popular with the backpacker crowd (hence why I vibe with it so much!). It has charming, funky neighborhoods, and streets lined with inspiring shops and cafés. You can tap into its amazing nightlife, from a sedate evening at a wine bar to dancing until sunrise at a thumping club. It’s also near the wine-centric Yarra Valley. There’s a lot to see and do here.

Melbourne is considered the “cultural capital” of the country and the best way to find out why is to take a walking tour.

I love walking tours. You’ll get to see the highlights and connect with a local guide that can answer all your questions. There are tours for every niche too, so regardless of your interests (or budget), you’ll be able to have fun and learn a lot about the city.

Here’s my list of the best walking tours in Melbourne.

          BEST OVERALL TOUR

          MELTours Laneways Tour

This tour gives you a great overview of Melbourne, including a thorough history of the city and a better understanding of how it evolved into the thriving yet laid-back Aussie metropolis that it is today. You’ll also discover the back alleys, the hidden lanes, and the secrets that lay underneath the streets. On this 2.5-hour tour, you’ll visit specialty shops and quirky cafés as you explore untrammeled, lesser-known routes.

          Tours start at 99 AUD.

          Best Free Tour

          I’m Free Tours

If you’re on a budget, I’m Free organizes no-charge walking tours in Melbourne. You can choose between a general walking tour in the morning that covers the main attractions and the stories behind them, or an afternoon tour called “Culture Capital,” which emphasizes art and culture and takes visitors down lesser-traveled lanes and arcades. Be sure to tip your guides at the end!

While those may be the best free and paid tours in town, Melbourne has a lot more to offer, no matter your interests. Here are eight other insightful and educational tours:

          1. Melbourne Street Tours

Street art has become a worldwide phenomenon in the last decade or so. Every big city on the planet has incredible street art and murals to admire — and Melbourne is no exception. In addition to taking you down some lesser-known alleyways, this tour finishes in an artist’s studio warehouse, so you can learn how these amazing works are created.

          Tours start at 49 AUD.

          Book here!

          2. Depot Adventures Hidden Bar Tour

Melbourne is littered with tiny, sometimes concealed lanes that house some lesser-known establishments. And this, of course, includes bars. This three-hour tour takes you to the backstreets to discover four hidden pubs. The expert local guide will not only regale you with tales of the bar scene in Melbourne but also tell you about the history of the city. Just be sure to come thirsty!

          Tours start at 58 AUD.

          Book here!

          3. Melbourne Walks

For over three decades, Melbourne Walks has been leading tours. No matter what your interests are, there’s probably a tour that appeals: there’s a crime-focused tour, for example, a back lanes and arcades jaunt, and tours that focus on topics such as architecture, literature, social justice, historic pubs, and individual historical figures. If you’re looking for something niche, start here.

          Tours start at 70 AUD.

          Book here!

          4. Aboriginal Heritage Walk

Through the Royal Botanical Gardens, you can take a journey through Melbourne and see it through Aboriginal eyes — specifically the Kulin people. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday at 11am, visitors are shown traditional uses of tools, medicine, plants, and food, as well as the rich and intriguing history and culture of the First Peoples of Australia. It’s incredibly informative!

          Tours start at 40 AUD.

          Book here!

          5. Blue Tongue Bikes

This bike tour is a great eco-friendly way to get around town. You’ll get an all-encompassing view of Melbourne, seeing all the major attractions while learning its history, from the early Aboriginal period to its establishment to the present day. During breaks, the expert local guide offers tips on what else there is to do and where to eat in the Melbourne area.

          Tours start at 65 AUD.

          Book here!

          6. Lantern Ghost Tours

For a spooky look into Melbourne’s seedy past, take a ghost tour. Over 90 minutes, you’ll travel back to the 19th century and explore the city’s haunted locations. You’ll trek down narrow alleys, marvel at historic haunted buildings, and hear all kinds of spooky stories from Melbourne’s past and present.

          Tours start at 26 AUD.

          Book here!

          7. Intrepid Urban Adventures

Sure, Melbourne has one of the best dining scenes — if not the best — in Australia. But if you’re into eating on the go, you can get another perspective on the food landscape of a place by visiting its markets. Intrepid’s 2.5-hour Multicultural Markets Culinary Culture Tour is designed to help you discover the wealth and diversity of the city’s many food markets. It celebrates the food culture in Melbourne, stopping at, among other sites, the famed Queen Victoria Market, the largest open-air market in Australia. You’ll meet vendors, sample their products, and walk away with a full stomach and a deeper knowledge of the diverse food scene of Melbourne.

          Tours start at 58 AUD.

Skyscrapers along the waterfront in Sydney, Australia on a bright and sunny day

Sydney is the most popular and largest city in Australia. If you visit the country, you’re going to visit here. Home to five million inhabitants (about 20% of the entire population), it has a ton of things to see and do, from the iconic Opera House and Harbour Bridge to its stunning beaches and plentiful museums (many of which are free).

As the country’s biggest city and most popular destination for tourists, there is a lot to do here. Beyond the typical sites, museums, and activities, there are also a lot of incredible walking tours that give you a sense of the people and culture of the city.

I love walking tours for this reason. Led by a local, they give you information you wouldn’t find by just wandering around on your own. You get someone who can answer your questions and share their insider tips.

There are a lot of walking tours in Sydney to choose from. To help you avoid some of the less than great ones, here’s my list of the best walking tours in Sydney:

            BEST OVERALL TOUR

            Bonza Bike Tours

Bonza Bike Tours takes pedalers on a four-hour, two-wheeled adventure, hitting all the sites — the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, Observatory Hill, the Rocks, Barangaroo Park, and much more — all while being regaled with quirky historical tales and facts about the city. Halfway through the ride, the group stops for a rest and a quick beer.

            Tours start at 149 AUD.

            Best Free Tour

            Locl Tour Sydney

Meet your guide at Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park at 10:30am and get ready for an info-packed 2.5 hours. Locl Tour Sydney offers an excellent primer on Sydney, which means if you’re a first-time visitor, consider doing this walking tour at the beginning of your stay. The tour delves into everything from Aboriginal history to the Opera House to the country’s infamous sharks and snakes. Just remember to tip your guide at the end!

While those may be the best free and paid tours in town, there’s a lot more on offer. Here are a few more of the best walking tours in Sydney to help you have fun during your stay:

            1. Sydney True Crime Tour

If you’re looking for a tour that explores the grittier side of the city beyond the standard tourist sites, this is the one for you. Over 90 minutes, you’ll wander historic areas around The Rocks neighborhood and learn about nefarious criminals and infamous crimes (the country was colonized by criminals, after all). The tour takes you down narrow alleys and into secret nooks as you discover Sydney’s underbelly. It’s pretty cool.

            Tours start at 34 AUD.

            Book here!

            2. Fit City

If you’d like a more active tour, this is a good one. This company runs guided walking, hiking, and running tours in the area. One of their unique offerings is the 4.5-hour Manly Hiking Tour. During the 11-kilometer (7-mile) trek, you’ll get some stunning views and learn a lot about the surroundings from the local guide. The hike culminates in Manly (one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city) where you can stroll the area’s charming streets and replenish yourself with well-earned food and drink.

            Tours start at 97 AUD.

            Book here!

            3. Sydney Architecture Walks

You don’t have to love buildings and their various styles to have a great time on a tour with Sydney Architecture Walks. Led by actual architects, these tours are jargon-free adventures that give visitors a deeper knowledge beyond why certain buildings are pretty. The 2-3-hour, small-group tour focuses on the patterns and forces that have shaped the appearance of contemporary Sydney, making it appropriate for anyone looking to learn more about the city’s history and design.

            Tours start at 49 AUD.

            Book here!

            4. Local Sauce Tours

Local Sauce Tours offers a variety of unique small group tours that are capped at 12 participants to ensure an intimate and fun experience. One of their most popular tours is the “Drink & Discover Secret Bar Crawl,” which showcases a mix of hidden and top-rated bars. Each night of the week highlights a different neighborhood (tours are offered on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), so if you wanted to drink your way around a few different areas with new friends, you could – just by taking this tour on different nights of the week.

If you’re more about the food than drink, try the “Local Sydney – Aussie Food, Culture & Coffee” tour, where you’ll sample a variety of Aussie treats (like vegemite toast and a flat white coffee) while wandering through historic neighborhoods. In addition to special interest tours, they also offer a 3-hour, Ultimate Sydney Walking Tour for first-time visitors. It covers all the major attractions while also teaching about Aboriginal culture and history.

            Tours start at 60 AUD.

            Book here!

            5. Lantern Ghost Tours

For a spooky tour around town, check out Lantern Ghost Tours, Australia’s largest ghost tour company. Their tours run on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights and take curious travelers around ghoulish sites where hair-raising crimes occurred and spirits haunt residents still. The tours last 90 minutes.

            Tours start at 36 AUD.

            Book here!

            6. Journey Walks

This tour company offers a few themed walks, but the one you shouldn’t miss is the 2.5-hour stroll around convict-era Sydney, on which guides lead a maximum of 14 guests around the city’s notorious colonial beginnings (mostly focusing on the Rocks area), when Sydney was a playground for British convicts. You’ll hear a lot of fascinating tales and stories that may inspire you to explore more on your own. The tour is a must for history buffs!

            Tours start at 36 AUD.

            Book here!

            7. The Rocks Aboriginal Dreaming Tour

Developed by Aboriginal Elder, Margret Campbell, and led by Aboriginal guides, this special walking tour simultaneously leads participants through ancient Aboriginal DreamTime and modern-day Sydney. On the 90-minute tour, you’ll learn about Aboriginal history, culture, and language while stopping at culturally important sites in the Rocks.

A big focus of this tour is the cultural intersection with the natural environment, something we often don’t think of when visiting big cities. Definitely check out this tour for the important perspectives and insights shared by the Aboriginal guides, Australia’s original inhabitants.

            Tours start at 69 AUD.

            Book here!

            8. Aboriginal Harbour Heritage Tour

Offered by the Botanic Gardens of Sydney, on this tour, you get to wander the harbor area with an Aboriginal guide who shares the history and culture of the area from the Aboriginal perspective. The one-hour walk focuses not only on the past but also on the regional flora. You’ll learn what specific flowers, plants, herbs, and trees mean to the Gadigal people and how they traditionally used them for various purposes. I highly recommend it. It adds a lot of perspective to the city.

            Tours start at 30 AUD.

            Book here!

            ***

Melbourne is probably my favorite city in Australia. While Sydney boasts the more iconic tourist attractions, Melbourne is more laid-back and a hub for arts and culture.

Home to over five million people, it has a diverse population and something of a European feel, home to plenty of festivals, art exhibitions, live music, stunning street art, chill bars and cafés, and delicious food. You could easily spend over a week here and only scratch the surface when it comes to things to see and do.

While public transportation goes everywhere, Melbourne is a bit sprawled out, so it’s important to choose the area where you stay carefully, otherwise you’ll spend most of your trip in transit.

To help you decide where to stay in Melbourne, in this post, I’ll highlight the best neighborhoods below so you can choose the area that suits your travel style and budget as the neighborhoods in this city all have their own feel.

But, before I get to the specifics, here are some common questions I get asked about neighborhoods in Melbourne:

What’s the best neighborhood for first-time visitors?
City Center, or “the CBD,” as locals are prone to call it, has something that will please most travelers. It’s crammed with great museums, monuments, cafés, restaurants, and bars. It’s the most central spot for doing lots of sightseeing.

What’s the best neighborhood for families?
St. Kilda is an old bohemian swath that happens to have the highest number of restaurants in town. But the neighborhood is also home to Luna Park, the world’s oldest theme park, plus it’s situated right on the sea. (Note this is also a great area for backpackers too!)

What’s the best neighborhood for shopping?
Shopaholics will be in heaven along boutique-lined Chapel Street in South Yarra.

What’s the best neighborhood for foodies?
Fitzroy is laden with incredible eateries — from classic and traditional bites to cutting-edge spots. I also think this is just a cool area to hang out in too.

What’s the best neighborhood for feeling like a local?
Richmond, located east of the center, has a diverse number of things to do that locals partake in, like eating, drinking, and shopping. Plus it’s home to “Little Saigon.”

              What’s the best neighborhood overall?
It’s hard to pinpoint just one Melbourne neighborhood as “the best,” but City Center fits this category because of its location and because it has a little bit of everything for everyone, no matter what your interests are. That said, I also love St. Kilda too.

With those questions now answered, here is a more specific breakdown of each neighborhood — with suggested accommodation for each so you’ll know where to stay in Melbourne.

Where to Stay in Melbourne for First-Time Visitors: City Center

A long-exposure shot at night of the famous Flinders Station in Melbourne, Australia
“The CBD” (an acronym for “Central Business District”) may not have a particularly sexy name, but it does have something most other neighborhoods in Melbourne do not: a little bit (or in some cases a whole lot) of everything. Shopping, dining, museums, cafés, galleries, and even nightlife are all represented here. Start at the iconic Flinders Street Station, which was the busiest railway terminal in the Southern Hemisphere in the 1920s, and then fan out and explore the center of Melbourne, including the popular Federation Square and nearby National Gallery of Victoria.

Best Places to Stay in City Center:

              • BUDGET: Mercure Welcome — Smack in the center of it all, this is a nice budget-friendly spot. Mercure may be a global chain, but it’s also a reliably good one too, and this location is no exception. The 330 rooms are tastefully bedecked with plus-sized beds, minibars, and desks. Some rooms have great views over the city too.
              • MIDRANGE: Brady Hotels Central Melbourne — This boutique hotel has a gym, self-service laundry, and rooms with soft, queen-sized beds, minibars, balconies, and Urban Skincare Co. bath products.
              • LUXURY: Treasury on Collins — Arguably the most elegant hotel in the CBD, the heritage-listed Treasury on Collins offers rooms that are apartment style: large, multiroom accommodations with kitchens, sofas, desks, king-sized beds, washing machines, and more. If you want to feel like you’re temporarily living in Melbourne, this is a pretty good place to do it.

Where to Stay in Melbourne for Families: St. Kilda

People relaxing on a street in St Kilda, Melbourne on a bright and sunny day
An old bohemian haunt that was also at one time the red-light district, St. Kilda is a beachside swath that is home to Luna Park, the world’s oldest theme park that’s fun for all ages. There’s a beachside boardwalk to explore and a fun arts-and-crafts fair on Sundays. It also happens to boast the highest number of restaurants in town. Start out on Acland Street, where the blocks are lined with eateries.

Best Places to Stay in St. Kilda:

              • BUDGET: Sixty Two on Grey — Just a few minutes walk to the nearest tram stop and a 12-minute walk to Luna Park, Sixty Two on Grey has apartment-style guest accommodations with kitchens and very comfortable beds, all for a budget-friendly price.
              • MIDRANGE: Tolarno Hotel — Founded by artist Mirka Mora and her husband, who arrived in Melbourne after fleeing Poland during World War II, the Tolarno has been a St. Kilda fixture for decades. Each of the retro-furnished rooms is unique, the walls of which are bathed in a different color and bedecked with pieces by local artists.
              • LUXURY: Quest St. Kilda Bayside — The 56 suites at Quest St. Kilda Bayside offer everything a family would want for a stay in this fun neighborhood, including kitchens, washing machines, and multiple bedrooms. The hotel is within walking distance of all of St. Kilda’s attractions, including Luna Park.

Where to Stay in Melbourne for Shopping: South Yarra

A view of South Yarra near the river with lots of greenery in Melbourne, Australia
South Yarra boasts sculpture parks, art galleries, and verdant gardens, but the main reason to plant yourself here for a while is for the superlative shopping. Don’t miss Chapel Street, a road flanked by boutique shops, where you can max out your credit card (or at least window-browse local and European designers). The area also has a lot of indie coffee shops too!

Best Places to Stay in South Yarra:

              • BUDGET: South Yarra Hostel — Set in a Victorian house, this hostel has a huge kitchen, a barbecue area, and an spacious common room. It’s small and cozy, with a super friendly staff.
              • MIDRANGE: The Claremont Guesthouse — Housed in a Victorian building from 1886, the Claremont offers various room types, from fully equipped apartments to double rooms, with ceiling fans and flat-screen TVs. Breakfast is included.
              • LUXURY: The Olsen — Set right on Chapel Street, the Olsen is perfectly placed to take advantage of the South Yarra shopping scene. The hotel is art-themed, including works by landscape artist Dr. John Olsen (for whom the hotel is named) sprinkled around the property. Rooms boast big, comfy beds and unique works of art, plus there are two restaurants and a day spa.

Where to Stay in Melbourne for Foodies: Fitzroy

A relaxing, green garden in the Fitzroy area of Melbourne, Australia
Once a solidly working-class neighborhood, Fitzroy has blossomed into a magnet for food-loving locals and visitors alike. The streets are now flanked by restaurants of every stripe — from those dishing up diverse non-Australian fare or locally sourced, locally inspired dishes to pubs serving elevated grub and cutting-edge, trend-setting eateries. Start on Gertrude Street, which is something of a microcosm of this culinary enclave itself.

Best Places to Stay in Fitzroy:

              • BUDGET: The Nunnery — Life in this building was once very different than it is now. Housed in an erstwhile convent, The Nunnery today is a fun, active hostel where travelers of all stripes hang out in the large guestroom between meals. The sleeping options include dorm-style rooms — with anywhere from 4 to 12 beds (including some female-only rooms) — as well as private rooms for one or two people.
              • MIDRANGE: Royal Derby Hotel —Over a century and a half old, all the rooms here are spacious and include a kitchenette with a toaster, microwave, and fridge. The in-house pub is one of the best in the neighborhood.
              • LUXURY: Lyf — Located on the border of Fitzroy and Collingwood, Lyf is a hip, 128-room property that includes a fully equipped common kitchen and a laundry facility for guests to use. The apartment-style rooms will make you feel like you’re living in the coolest part of Melbourne.

Where to Stay in Melbourne for Living Like a Local: Richmond

A popular, busy street in lovely Richmond, Melbourne in Australia
Richmond is an up-and-coming area that, like Fitzroy, is brimming with delicious eats. Unlike Fitzroy, though, it’s more of a local affair, complete with its own Vietnamese enclave known as “Little Saigon.” If you want to feel like a local and get away from most tourists, this is a great neighborhood to do it in.

Best Places to Stay in Richmond:

              • BUDGET: Knightsbridge Apartments — Located just west of Richmond, Knightsbridge is one of the only affordable options in the area. The no-frills rooms are cozy, and include free Wi-Fi, AC, and a small kitchenette.
              • MIDRANGE: Lanbruk Richmond Hill — The 26 rooms and suites at the Lanbruk are stylish and large, with coffee machines, toasters, teakettles, and desks. Some offer incredible views of the neighborhood. There’s also a rooftop terrace with scenic views over the area.
              • LUXURY: The Motley — This five-star hotel celebrates Richmond’s past as the center of Melbourne’s fashion and textile industry. The interior of the hotel — its lobby, halls, and rooms — are bathed in color and accented with rich textiles. The hotel is also home to works by many local artists. The stylish and spacious rooms have massive soft mattresses, high-end furniture, and amazing showers.

              ***

Melbourne is a lively, fun city perfect for backpackers and budget travelers. Since it’s so spread out, it’s important to pick a neighborhood that best suits your interests so you minimize time getting around. But, no matter where you stay, you can’t really go wrong since everywhere in Melbourne is awesome!

The busy downtown of Melbourne, Australia with streetcars and people crossing the road

Melbourne is the backpacker hub of Australia. Its laid-back vibe, awesome live music scene, and rowdy nightlife make it a favorite for backpackers and budget travelers alike.

Since it’s a popular spot for budget travelers, the city boasts dozens of hostels. In my decade-plus of visiting Melbourne, the hostel scene here has changed drastically. You have so many choices it can be overwhelming.

There are a lot of things to consider when selecting a hostel.

To help you plan your trip, here is my list of the hostels in Melbourne that I like the most. If you don’t want to read the longer list below, the following hostels are the best in each category:

                Best Hostel for Budget Travelers:
                Best Hostel for Families:
Best Hostel for Solo Female Travelers:
                Best Hostel for Digital Nomads:
                Best Hostel for Partying:
                Best Overall Hostel:

Want the specifics of each hostel? Here’s my comprehensive list of the best hostels in Melbourne:

                1. Barkly Backpackers

Colorful bunk beds in a light-filled dorm room at Barkly Backpackers hostel in Melbourne, Australia.
Barkly is a cozy backpacker hostel just 5 minutes from the beach. This is more of a quiet (but still social) hostel rather than a party hostel, so it’s a good place to stay if you want to meet people but still get a good sleep. I like the homey feel and that the staff are super welcoming and friendly. There are a lot of free perks too, like free coffee/tea all day and free laundry powder for when you need to wash your clothes.

The dorm rooms are large and spacious and have huge windows but the beds are just basic metal bunks. There are no curtains on the beds but the mattresses are decent and there are lockers to store your gear. It’s an affordable, no-frills spot.

                Barkly Backpackers at a glance:

                • Social common area so it’s easy to meet people
                • Fully equipped kitchen
                • Free coffee and tea

                Book here!

                2. Flinders Backpackers

Common area with tables and pool table at Flinders Backpackers hostel in Melbourne, Australia.
Located next to Flinders Street Station, this hostel offers massive 18-bed dorms. The dorms are big but the bunks are cheap metal frames (so bring earplugs if you’re a light sleeper like me). There are no curtains but there are individual lights and outlets to charge your devices (something I always appreciate).

The atmosphere more than makes up for the beds though as there’s a huge common area, a TV room where they host movie nights (with free popcorn), and a huge kitchen for cooking your own meals. I really liked that they have a bar and restaurant on-site which has events almost every night (things get really lively on the weekend). It’s a good hostel for meeting people if you’re a solo traveler.

                Flinders Backpackers at a glance:

                • Lively bar on-site
                • Organizes activities every night (movie nights, free drink nights)
                • Fun, social atmosphere

                Book here!

                3. Nomads St Kilda

Red exterior of Base St. Kilda hostel with tram going by in front in Melbourne, Australia
Nomads St Kilda is one of my favorite hostels in Australia. The hostel is definitely a party hostel so don’t stay here if you’re looking for quiet!

I love that they host regular activities, including karaoke and foam parties, and the huge common room here has a pool table, foosball, and board games. Like most party hostels, the beds aren’t great. The bunks are cheap metal frames with thin mattresses and no curtains, but if you’re staying here you’ll likely be up most of the night anyway!

Nomads St Kilda at a glance:

                • Bar on-site makes it easy to meet people
                • Organizes lots of fun activities (karaoke, foam parties)
                • 5-minute walk to the beach

                Book here!

                4. Tram Stop 14 Backpackers

Exterior of Tramstop 14 Backpackers hostel with dragon mural.
This no-frills hostel is one of the cheapest in the city. I like that they cater to long-term travelers as there’s usually a minimum three-night stay so it’s easier to connect with people. They have discounts for stays longer than a week too. I also love the huge, well-stocked kitchen (eating out here can really add up).

The dorm beds are basic bunks with no curtains but the mattresses are decent and there are plenty of outlets to charge your devices. There’s lots of live music nearby too. If you’re a solo long-term traveler, stay here.

Tram Stop 14 Backpackers at a glance:

                • Super affordable
                • Lots of live music nearby
                • Discounts for long-term stays (great for digital nomads)

                Book here!

                5. The Nunnery

Cozy, light-filled common area with lots of couches, tables, and a fireplace at The Nunnery hostel in Melbourne, Australia.
Built in the late 1880s, this was an actual nunnery for over six decades. Today, it’s a fun hostel with a cool interior design (they kept the stained glass and huge staircases from the nunnery). The hostel has a very laid-back, homey feel so it’s easy to chat with other travelers and meet people. There’s a small kitchen if you want to cook and they also rent bikes in case you want to explore the neighborhood.

While the bunks are basic metal ones the mattresses are generally pretty decent. There are no privacy curtains, but there are lockers for storing your stuff. I especially like that they host lots of free events, such as pub crawls and movie nights, so there is always something to do.

                The Nunnery at a glance:

                • Organizes daily free activities (pub crawls, movie nights)
                • Large private rooms (great for couples/families)
                • Courtyard BBQ for hanging out &cooking

                Book here!

                6. The Mansion Melbourne

People walking into the huge Mansion Hostel in Melbourne, Australia
This newly renovated hostel has become extremely popular due to its fantastic location in the artsy Northside area of Melbourne. The highlight for me is that it’s inside the “free tram zone” around the CBD and within close reach of Queen Victoria Market, Federation Square, and Chinatown. They have friendly staff, a well-equipped kitchen, and since it’s not really a party hostel it tends to be a bit less rowdy than others (there’s a no noise rule after 11pm).

The beds are basic metal bunks but the mattresses are really thick and there are lockers for storage. Each bed has a plug and a light too, as well as a privacy curtain so you can get a decent sleep. There’s a bar and cafe on-site too, plus a space for digital nomads who need to work (which I think is super convenient).

                The Mansion at a glance:

                • Convenient CBD location
                • Bar, cafe, co-working spaces
                • Well-equipped kitchen

                Book here!

                ***

While there are now dozens of hostels in Melbourne, these hostels are the best the city has to offer. Whether you’re looking for a long-term stay as you sort out a working holiday or just visiting for a few nights, a stay at these hostels will ensure you have a fun, safe, and social experience.

After over fifteen years of traveling the world, I still love to stay in hostels. They add character to your experience and make it easy to meet other travelers. If you want to make the most out of your time in Melbourne, be sure to stay at any of the hostels above. You won’t be disappointed.

A wide open beach in Australia with a 4x4 vehicle driving in the sand

Few countries capture the imagination quite like Australia. With world-class beaches, unusual wildlife, stunning natural landscapes, a unique history, and a fun and vibrant culture, Australia has something to offer every traveler who makes the journey to the Land Down Under.

While the country is easy to navigate as a solo traveler, there are also plenty of amazing tour options for those who prefer traveling in groups or who might not have the time or energy to plan their own getaway.

I’ve been visiting Australia since 2006 and have used many tour companies over the years (in addition to getting around on my own). In this post, I share my list of the best travel companies in Australia to help you make the most out of your next trip.

From simple walking tours to in-depth, multi-day excursions, there’s something on the list for every interest — and every budget!

                  1. Best Bike Tour Company: Bonza Bike Tours

Bonza is a bike tour company in Sydney that offers a number of options, depending on what you’re interested in. The Highlights tour lasts 2.5 hours and will show you all the major points of interest in Sydney. It’s suitable for families and kids, costing 99 AUD for adults and 79 AUD for children.

For a more in-depth experience, the Classic tour (129 AUD) lasts 4 hours and provides a much more thorough introduction to this world-class city. They also offer bike rentals so you can just explore the city on your own in case you don’t have the time for a full tour (bike rentals cost 30 AUD for 4 hours and 40 AUD for 24 hours).

                  Book Bonza Bike Tours here!

                  2. Best Walking Tour Company: I’m Free

A vivid sunset photo of the Sydney Opera in Australia
I always like to start a trip with a free walking tour, as they are a helpful way to get oriented and ask a local all my questions. Both Sydney and Melbourne have insightful (and free!) walking tours offered by I’m Free. Their tours last 2.5-3 hours and are a great way to learn about history and culture from a local. There are a few tour options in each city, so you have some flexibility with timing as well as which areas you focus on.

If you haven’t done much research before your arrival, this is a good company to start with. Be sure to tip your guide at the end!

                  3. Runner Up Walking Tour Company: iCity Tours

The city of Perth, Australia lit up at night
If you find yourself all the way out in Perth (which I hope you do — it’s a great, underrated and under-visited city!), iCity Tours has half a dozen awesome free walking tours. They are organized by Visit Perth and run by volunteers so it’s a fun way to interact with the locals and really get a sense of what life is like in Australia’s underrated coastal city.

There are six different free tours on offer, each lasting around 90 minutes. The Orientation tour offers a quick introduction to the city and its past. If you have more time, be sure to check out the Convicts and Colonials tour as well. It will give you a sense of what life was like as a convict in Western Australia.

                    4. Best Party Tour Company: The Magic Bus

                    The Magic Bus Tour Company
This backpacker bus is the perfect choice for travelers looking to party. Each month, the trip departs with 25 backpackers aged 18-35 for 3-4 weeks exploring the country’s national parks, camping, bonfires, and non-stop parties and shenanigans.

Trips go from Perth north to Broome or east to Melbourne so you have to time your trip accordingly to line up with the set departure. The itineraries are always flexible, as they let riders vote on where to go and what to do, so every trip is unique. They try to keep a balance of 50% men and 50% women, as well as a balance of different nationalities, so there is always a diverse group.

Prices vary per trip but expect to pay around 250 AUD per 1,000 kilometers.

                    5. Our Top Tour Pick: Intrepid Travel

The famous Uluru rock in Australia, as seen from the nearby road
Intrepid is my go-to travel company when it comes to multi-day excursions. In Australia, they offer dozens of different itineraries, ranging from a quick three-day tour to in-depth 17-day adventures around the country.

Unlike some of the companies above, this is not a party tour. They are small groups led by expert local guides with a focus on culture, history, and food, as well as ethical travel and leaving a small environmental impact. You’re guaranteed to return home with a much deeper and more nuanced appreciation of your destination.

And you’ll get a much broader range of ages and travel styles with Intrepid tours too (it’s not just for backpackers). With such a wide range of travelers choosing Intrepid tours, you always end up with an awesome group of people to travel with.

I’ve been on a handful of their tours over the years and have never been disappointed. I always learn a ton and meet amazing people. They make sure you have enough things to do without planning out every minute of the day, so it’s a good balance of downtime and tours. I can’t recommend them enough!

Sydney is one of the greatest cities in the world. It has amazing beaches, scenic shorelines, World Heritage sites, and top-notch dining.

It’s a large city, and it’s very spread out, meaning that it can be hard to figure out where to stay. I’ve stayed in every area of the city over my many years of visiting here.

Each area of Sydney has its own vibe and highlights.

In this post, I’ll break each neighborhood down and give you suggested places to stay for each of them.

Where to Stay for Views: The Rocks

People shopping at the different vendor stalls at The Rocks Market in Sydney, Australia
Just north of Sydney’s Central Business District and on the harbor, this neighborhood offers great views along the waterfront. There are numerous historic buildings in the area, including several pubs. The Rocks Markets is open each weekend, selling all kinds of treasures, including arts and crafts, jewelry, and tasty treats. The area has tons of stellar restaurants, museums, and entertainment venues, which helps explain its popularity with tourists.

Best Places to Stay in The Rocks

                      • BUDGET: Sydney Harbour YHA – This hostel is in a great location in the old colonial area of the city, offering views of the harbor and the Opera House. It has all the modern comforts of a good hostel, including a large self-catering kitchen, spacious communal areas, on-site grocery store, coffee bar, and a large rooftop terrace. This isn’t really a party hostel, though, but rather a great place for travelers looking for a quiet stay. It’s great for families too!
                      • MID-RANGE: The Australian Heritage Hotel – This historic hotel offers quaint rooms with a vintage feel and all the standard amenities you’d expect from a mid-range hotel. To top it all off, it’s also home to one of Sydney’s oldest pubs, where you can enjoy live music alongside an all-Australian selection of craft beer !
                      • LUXURY: Four Seasons Sydney – Offering incredible views of the harbor and the city — as well as sumptuous luxury — this is a great choice for anyone looking to visit Sydney in style. With a state-of-the-art fitness center and wellness center and spa, you’ll be able to get pampered while you enjoy all that Sydney has to offer.

Where to Stay for Local Life: Surry Hills

The tree-lined Bourke Street, with a bike lane, in the neighborhood of Surry Hills in Sydney, Australia
Southeast of the Central Business District, leafy Surry Hills has traditionally been known as the best place in Sydney for fashion. The area is perfect for travelers who want to shop ‘til they drop, but its appeal is much broader than that. There are lots of unique, creative dining options, and many old warehouses have been transformed into classy art galleries and gorgeous homes. The area is perfect for young travelers, foodies, and those wanting to experience Oxford Street, the longtime Gay Capital of Sydney.

Best Places to Stay in Surry Hills

It was redesigned in 2018 to become a boutique hotel with interiors inspired by the 1920s and 1970s. It’s right near Central Station and only a short drive from Chinatown and Paddy’s Market. The hotel also has a rooftop terrace with a garden, lounge, and an honor bar.

Where to Stay for a Local Beach: Coogee

A walkway along the waterfront in Coogee, Sydney, with houses and a small beach in the distance
This little area with the funny name is perfect for travelers who want a beach vibe but not all the craziness of Bondi Beach. This neighborhood is an eastern suburb of Sydney, but you can get to town on public transit in less than half an hour. Coogee has a youthful and family-friendly feel. If your trip calls for a lot of beach time, this is a great option. There’s super snorkeling nearby at Gordons Bay, and be sure to check out the Wylie Baths — amazing rock pools perfect for swimming.

Best Places to Stay in Coogee

                      • BUDGET: Mad Monkey Coogee Beach – This is a great budget hostel located right on the beach. They have a cool co-working space and there are plenty of bars and restaurants around as well. It’s not fancy by any means, but it gets the job done! • MID-RANGE: Coogee Bay Boutique Hotel – This lovely boutique hotel is in a great location, located only 20 minutes from downtown and 20 minutes from the airport. It’s right beside the ocean as well, and there is a restaurant, beer garden, and night club on-site.
                      • LUXURY: Crowne Plaza Coogee Beach – This incredible hotel boasts panoramic views of the ocean, a heated swimming pool, 2 bars, tennis courts, and a fully-equipped fitness center. Darling Harbour with docked ship along the pier and modern skyscrapers in the background on a sunny summer day in Sydney, Australia
This area of town is best for families. This lively neighborhood is a huge tourist draw, as there are tons of attractions along the waterfront. The Sydney Aquarium and IMAX are here, and there are all kinds of dining. The area’s clubs come alive at night and there’s lots of shopping. If you’re traveling with kids, consider this neighborhood. If not, I probably wouldn’t stay in this Disney-like environment.

Best Places to Stay in Darling Harbour

                        • BUDGET: Siesta Sydney – This budget-friendly hostel is clean, located in a great location, and has really friendly staff. They have free towels, free Wi-Fi, a fully-equipped kitchen, and laundry facilities.

Where to Stay for Beach Fun: Bondi Beach

The beautiful Bondi Beach near Sydney, Australia on a bright and sunny summer day
Bondi Beach is world famous. Once you see the iconic beach, you’ll understand why: The amazing views of the Pacific, the seafood restaurants along Campbell Parade, and the happening nightlife! This is a great place for backpackers and those looking to party. Bondi is not right in the heart of the city, but public transit is a piece of cake. This area appeals to a younger crowd, and you’re sure to see surfers in the water, sun worshippers on the sand, and adventurous sorts hiking the scenic coastal trails.

Best Places to Stay in Bondi Beach

                        • BUDGET: Wake Up! Bondi Beach – If you love the beach, you can’t beat this place! There’s a great rooftop space overlooking Bondi Beach and the hostel offers free surfboards. Where to Stay for Being Central: Central Business District

The famous Sydney Opera House near the water in Sydney, Australia
Sydney’s CBD is the heart of it all. It’s a huge area filled with skyscrapers, business, banking, and commerce. But it’s not only for the suit and tie set. This area has tons of attractions, including the Opera House and Royal Botanic Garden. The neighborhood is generally pretty pricey, but the location may be worth it. The city’s best dining is here, as are the poshest hotels and chicest art galleries. You won’t find a lot of quirky shops, flea markets, or vintage treasures, but you will feel the excitement of big-city living!

Best Places to Stay in the Central Business District

                        • BUDGET: Nomads Sydney – There aren’t many budget options in this part of the city when it comes to accommodation, so Nomads will likely be your best choice. They have free Wi-Fi and an on-site bar, making it a great place to have fun and meet people.
                        • MID-RANGE: Park Regis City Centre – With a rooftop pool and views overlooking the city, this is a great mid-range hotel offering value above and beyond the price tag. The location is perfect and allows you easy access to all of the main attractions in the city, and they also offer a free airport shuttle as well.
                        • LUXURY: Sheraton Grand Sydney Hyde Park – This hotel overlooks Hyde Park and boasts an indoor swimming pool, rooftop fitness center, a great breakfast buffet, as well as amazing restaurants and room service. It’s the perfect place to pamper yourself in the heart of the city.

                        Best Non-Central Neighborhood: Manly

People enjoying Manly beach on a sunny day in Australia
Manly is a suburb of Sydney located just north of the city. It is famous for its amazing beach, giant waves, surfing, and wild nightlife. The area has a completely different vibe to it than the central city; it’s a part of town that knows how to have a good time. A lot of tourists actually miss that part of the city as it is a bit out of the way. But don’t let that stop you — it’s worth the short ride to get here. In fact, it’s one of my favorite areas of the city! You’ll also find some gorgeous coastal walking trails on this side of the harbor too.

Best Places to Stay in Manly

                        • BUDGET: Manly Bunkhouse – This is a great hostel located just a five-minute walk from the beach. There are dorm rooms, private rooms, and family suites. There’s a garden and BBQ area out back and a shared kitchen for guests to use. The staff are also super helpful and can help you make the most out of your trip.
                        • MID-RANGE: Stoke Beach House – This hotel is a bit like an elevated hostel, and there are both dorm rooms as well as private rooms. There’s a nice communal atmosphere and a ton of freebies here, including free yoga in the mornings, complimentary breakfast, and free two-hour equipment rental (for bikes, surfboards, snorkels, and skateboards). There’s also a guest kitchen, a bar on site, and it’s just steps from the beach. This is a great option if you’re looking for more than a cheap backpacker hostel, but still want to stay in a lively, social place.
                        • LUXURY: Manly Pacific Sydney MGallery Collection – Located right across from Manly Beach, this hotel is in the perfect location for those looking to balance soaking up the rays on the beach with Manly’s wild nightlife. The hotel has a fitness center and rooftop pool, as well as a nice bar and à la carte breakfast (some rooms also have kitchenettes so you can prepare your own). You’ll get some great views here too!

Where to Stay for Backpackers: Kings Cross

Located North of Paddington and east of the downtown core, Kings Cross is another party district for any night owls looking to have some wild and cheap fun. There are a ton of cheap restuarants and hostels here, so you’ll find a good mix of both backpackers and locals. It’s one of the cheaper areas of the city. If you’re not a backpacker or not looking to party, I wouldn’t stay here.

Best Places to Stay in Kings Cross

                        • BUDGET: Mad Monkey East Side – This is a social hostel where the staff host plenty of fun daily activities to help you meet people. The beds here are quite comfortable, the bathrooms and showers are kept clean, and the lockers in each room are huge. The hostel is surrounded by lots of restaurants and shops, as well as a few bars, so there are a bunch of things to do in the area.
                        • MID-RANGE: Sydney Potts Point Central Apartment Hotel – Boasting a rooftop terrace with views over the city, and located only a 5 minute walk from the rambunctious nightlife of Kings Cross, Sydney Potts Point is the perfect choice for travelers wanting privacy and comfort while still looking to be right next to the action. Most of the rooms have kitchenettes, the beds are quite comfy, and the staff can help you organize all sorts of fun tours and day trips!
                        • LUXURY: Spicers Potts Point – This boutique hotel offers all the luxury you need for a very reasonable price. With just 20 rooms spread across three Victorian terrace houses, Spicers has amazing staff (the staff here really go above and beyond), complimentary breakfast, and incredibly comfy beds. It’s a great choice for anyone looking for a luxurious stay in a lively area of the city.

                        ***

While Sydney is a big place, it’s not overwhelming. You should be able to hit all the highlights in one trip. Of course, this is by no means an exhaustive list of places to stay – these are just my favorites!

But no matter where you stay, I’m confident you’ll enjoy the city and have an amazing time in Australia!

Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. My favorite companies that offer the best service and value are:
